Motivation - By Rise’ Carter

Exactly what motivates you?  How do you stay motivated and “fed”?  More importantly, how do you motivate the people around you?  Are you a positive influence?

Effective leaders know and understand the mission, vision and values of an organization and how every department and individual plays an integral part in the success of the company.  This is true whether you work in a small nail salon, large destination spa or a fortune 500 company.

Everyone has an internal desire to achieve.  Exploring and discovering each individual’s special talents, helping them set career goals, and then leading them into that direction are the responsibilities of every manager, supervisor or leader.  People can be managed, but more likely want to be led.

Employees, educators, co-workers or anyone else involved in the overall success of a business respond more positively with a leader who knows how to mix constructive criticism with constructive encouragement.  They are motivated and inspired by knowing that they are valuable and appreciated.

A positive environment, one that promotes creative thinking and encourages problem solving skills, is the ideal workplace.  A manager that can recognize their own shortcomings, seek the collective wisdom of the group, and accentuate the positive will prevail and build a strong, loyal and dedicated team.

It sounds like a daunting task, but in fact it is quite simple.  It boils down to two key words; Appreciation and Praise.  Appreciation is a feeling or expression of gratitude, gratefulness, a statement of acknowledgment.  Praise is an expression of admiration, approval and recognition of someone’s good qualities.

Everyone, regardless of their contribution to the company, responds and is more enthusiastic when they know they are appreciated for their hard work and efforts and then praised for it.  A simple “Thank you” can go a long way.
