Clients Going Through Chemotherapy

What every nail technician should know about their clients and chemotherapy.

A nail technician approached us with a question about a client who was about to start chemotherapy.  The client wanted to keep getting her enhancements and she wanted to make sure it was safe.  We quickly delved into researching this question and here are some things we came up with:

We called the American Cancer Society regarding chemo and artificial nails.  They e-mailed us the following response:

“Generally, doctors recommend that patients do not wear artificial nails during chemotherapy treatment.  This is because of the possible changes that may occur to the nails and nail beds as a side effect of treatment.  While temporary, these changes can be uncomfortable and doctor and nurses will want to be able to see the nails and monitor any changes that may occur.”

We also found a great article on the Nail Magazine website that covered this topic.

We all dream of a day when things like cancer and chemotherapy will not be an issue.  Until then, we thought this was VERY important information that every nail technician should know.

If you have a client in this situation, we recommend offering her natural nail manicures while she is going through her treatments.  Offer her some complimentary polish remover so she can go to her appointments with bare nails.  She may also need some extra pampering during this difficult time, so encourage her to keep up an at-home care program with Nurture Oil and Nurture Lotion to keep her hands and nails looking healthy and smooth.
